How Rudrabhishek Puja Helps To Alleviate Suffering?

‘Rudra’ the destroyer of sorrows and worries is worshiped by Sanatanis around the globe. The word ‘Abhishek’ or ‘Abhishekam’ refers to the act of worship which aims to provide purification and cleansing. Hence, the word Rudrabhishek stands for a Puja which aims to cleanse and purify through the blessings of ‘Lord Rudra’. Countless Hindus join hands to worship the Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva during Mahashivratri and other auspicious occasions. The ritual involves pouring milk, water, and other offerings over a Shiva lingam, a representation of the god. The puja is said to bring peace, prosperity, and blessings to the devotee. The benefits of performing Rudrabhishek are many. It is said that the devotee who does Rudrabhishek daily with full devotion and faith is relieved from all his sins and attains moksha.

The origin and significance of Rudrabhishek Puja

There are multiple stories that revolve around the history of Rudrabhishek Puja. The actual legend is traced back to the times of ramayana. It is believed that before leaving for Lanka, Lord Ram established a Shiva Lingam in Rameshwaram and performed the Rudrabhishek puja for the first time.
According to another legend popular in North India, it is believed that Lord Rudra manifested on earth in the form of Rudra Lingam after the conflict between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. As per the myth, Lord Brahma asked Lord Vishnu about his origin. To which Vishnu replied that Brahma originated from his Navel. Now, this led to a major conflict between the two lords. As a result of this, Lord Shiva took the avatar of Rudra in the form of Lingam. When both the lords failed to recognise the Aadi (origin) and Ant(end) of this Linga, then they offered Abhishek to this Lingam. This was the first ever Rudrabhishek.
Another story says that the name Rudra is related with 11 Rudras bestowed to earth by Lord Shiva. It is said that Lord Brahma asked Lord Shiva to make a few intriguing creatures for earth. Lord Brahma mentioned his dreariness which he got from creating monotonous creatures. Being a lord of benevolence, Lord Shiva kept the solicitation of Lord Brahma and made 11 everlasting creatures:

Kapaali, Pingala, Bhima, Virupaksha, Vilohitaa, Ajesha, Shavasana, Shasta, Shambu, Chanda and Dhruva.
The rudra avatar of Lord Shiva, is considered to be both mighty and ferocious. However, he is also the bringer of peace. Therefore, the ones who seek to destroy sorrows from their life worship Lord Rudra and perform the Rudrabhishek Puja.
